Last month, Cadbury announced that Dairy Milk, the UK's favourite chocolate, is to receive Fairtrade certification by late summer 2009. This groundbreaking move is a significant boost to the Fairtrade movement and its farmers. It will result in the tripling of sales of cocoa under Fairtrade terms for small farmers in Ghana. This will increase Fairtrade income for existing Fairtrade certified groups as well as providing opportunities for thousands more farmers to benefit from the Fairtrade system.
Joining Fairtrade is part of Cadbury's ongoing commitment to ethical trade and very much in keeping with the company's heritage. The Cadbury family first established a relationship with Ghana 100 years ago. A year ago they created the Cadbury Cocoa Partnership - a £45 million investment over the next ten years to secure the sustainable socio-economic future of cocoa farming in Ghana, India, Indonesia and the Caribbean.
Cadbury believe that by joining forces with the Fairtrade Foundation, they can further improve conditions for farmers and farming communities.
