BMW asks suppliers to commit to sustainability

BMW has extended its guidelines on sustainability to its second-tier vendors.

In its report Sustainable Value Report 2008, the German car giant said that subcontractors will be required to meet social and environmental standards.

These include zero tolerance to child and forced labour, as well as other commitments on environmentally friendly manufacturing.

When requested, the suppliers will be expected to provide information on their utility consumption, and production waste and sewage. They are also required to implement an environmental management system.

In addition, from the end of this year potential vendors will be expected to answer 29 questions on their social and environmental standards. Results will form a key part of BMW's selection criteria and will be kept on the company's supplier database.

Herbert Diess, head of purchasing at BMW, said: "To uphold our claim of being a sustainable company, sustainability must begin with our procurement process. Integrating sustainability throughout the entire value chain will be one of the major challenges of the future."
