HP to increase sustainable purchases

Hewlett-Packard (HP) has pledged to buy more paper from certified or recycled sources.

The US technology firm wants 40 per cent of the paper it sells to come from sustainable sources by 2011, after joining conservation organisation WWF's Global Forest & Trade Network (GFTN).

HP sells more than 280,000 tonnes of paper every year to businesses and consumers. The company will ask vendors to help with the sustainability goal and, in joining the GFTN, also aims to cut supply chain carbon emissions associated with deforestation.

Suzanne Apple, vice-president for business and industry at WWF, said: "Every year, more than 30 million acres of natural forest are destroyed to meet the growing demand for wood and agricultural products. With this new relationship, HP is helping protect the world's forests by sourcing and trading responsible forest products."

Earlier this year Greenpeace accused HP of breaking its promise to stop buying chemicals for its computer products.
