Winning approach to sustainable procurement and the developing world

Article taken from the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) website. To view article, click here

A new guide from CIPS and Traidcraft will help practitioners to 'buy better' from the developing world, using economic, social and environmental performance as key success indicators.

Win Win: Achieving Sustainable Procurement with the Developing World is a free guide designed to minimise business risk and reputational damage and highlights the pitfalls of purchasing from the developing world.

The guide provides purchasers with considerations

  • on building relationships with suppliers in developing countries, highlighting the need for honesty and sensitivity to cross-cultural issues
  • on how to bonus both purchasers and suppliers to encourage and reward good practice
  • on selecting codes or standards which address priorities in a developing country context

The guide includes case study examples, and follows on from the guidance 'Taking the lead: A guide to more responsible procurement practices,' published by CIPS and Traidcraft in 2007, which summarises the business drivers for responsible purchasing.

David Noble, Chief Executive at CIPS said "The aim of the game here is for highly efficient supply chains, helping buyers to overcome some of the major challenges when working with the developing world. Getting it right can mean better quality, better productivity and more trusting relationships which provides a platform for openness, discussion and improvement and innovation. Responsible purchasing from developing countries is increasingly an economic and reputational imperative and is key to a successful business agenda. CIPS is delighted to have once again collaborated with Traidcraft on this unique publication."
