New Sustainable Procurement Publication Specifically for the Construction Sector

Following interest from construction industry stakeholders who expressed an interest in funding sustainable procurement guidance for the UK sector, Action Sustainability have been working with CIRIA to produce new guidance.

Increasing legislation and a growing focus on environmental and sustainability requirements have stressed the need for more responsible practices across all industries, but especially in construction. Client and stakeholder expectations are growing, putting the construction sector under increasing pressure to both manage risk in the supply chain, as well as differentiate themselves as environmentally, socially and economically responsible organisations.

In response, CIRIA and Action Sustainability are currently producing guidance to steer the construction industry through the sustainable procurement maze. Based on the world's first sustainable procurement guidance - BS8903 - Sustainable Procurement in Construction illustrates the key sustainability opportunities and challenges faced in construction procurement and provides a practical step-by-step approach to managing sustainable procurement across construction projects.

Sustainable Procurement in Construction will help construction companies to;

  • Identify the key principles of sustainable procurement and clearly illustrate how these can be applied in the construction sector
  • Demonstrate how responsible decision-making and sustainable practices can be embedded across an organisation and its supply chain, to deliver construction projects that embrace corporate social responsibility commitments, such as procuring locally
  • Help organisations not only benefit from knowledge learnt through best practice case studies, but also highlight how these improvements can assist with project management; environmental, social and budgetary performance; as well as reducing risk and demonstrating good corporate social responsibility

The publication is suitable for all construction organisations, whether they are large or small and will be available in February 2011.

    Hi Fiona,
    I just read Your text in www.actionsustainability.com/news/349. One question has bothered me for some time: are there concrete initiatives and arguments from the client side thet would encourage sustainability in construction? From the developers point of view, sustainability in the construction "side" is still mostly seen as an additional cost in a project. This approach needs updating. How do or could clients reason or justify sustainability (other than being modern and environmentally enlighted)?

    I'll try to get hold of the BS8903 as soon as it comes out.

    Thank You,
    Ilkka Korpi (Mr.)
