Leading support services and construction company Carillion is celebrating after topping its sector and gaining Platinum status in the prestigious Business in the Community Corporate Responsibility Index as well as coming in the top ten in the Sunday Times Best Green Companies awards.
The BiTC Corporate Responsibility Index is the UK's leading voluntary benchmark of Corporate Responsibility which compares, celebrates and communicates the social and environment performance of companies. Those that achieve Platinum status demonstrate that CR is embedded in strategic decision-making and incentive structures and have improved CR management and performance over three/four years.
The Sunday Times Best Green Companies awards recognise companies at the cutting edge of improving corporate environmental performance and this year Carillion achieved tenth place overall and fourth in its category (Bigger Companies with High Environmental Impact).
Carillion is one of only 15 companies to remain in the Best Green Companies top 60 list since it started four years ago.
The news comes at the close of Carillion's annual Sustainability Week events, which always coincides with World Environment Day.
Hundreds of employees from all around the world including Canada and the Middle East have taken part in sustainable events from working with Wildlife Trusts to raising money for local charities.
Carillion chose this year's Sustainability Week to launch its latest 2020 Sustainability Strategy, which concentrates on six positive outcomes: lead the way in our sector, enable low-carbon economies; protect the environment; build a successful business; support sustainable communities and provide better prospects for our people.
The strategy aims to build on Carillion's strong track record in sustainability and supports Carillion's goal to become the leading sustainable support services company.
Commenting on Carillion's success, Richard Howson, Chief Operating Officer said: "We are absolutely delighted to have topped our sector in the BiTC awards giving us Platinum status as well as gaining a top ten position in the Sunday Times Best Green Companies Awards. Our new strategy aims to make us not only a leading sustainable business but also the leading sustainable support services company - and these new awards certainly demonstrate we're going in the right direction! We couldn't have done this without the skill and dedication of all our people working collaboratively to deliver our sustainability commitments."
The Best Green Companies has a robust methodology to measure environmental performance and includes a survey of employees to find out their views on the companies they work for.
