Sustainability lessons learned from the Olympic Park construction site are to be shared with the wider built environment industry through an innovative partnership between the UK Green Building Council and the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA).
In line with the aim to make London 2012 a truly sustainable Games, pioneering techniques have been used in the design and construction of the Olympic Park and its venues. UK-GBC has been chosen to disseminate the sustainability lessons learned as part of the ODA's Learning Legacy Programme.
UK-GBC's year-long events programme will focus on specific venues such as the Velodrome, the Stadium and the Aquatics Centre and will cover sustainability themes including materials, energy and carbon, biodiversity, green building standards and the regeneration of East London.
The first event in the series will be on 29 November 2011.
John Armitt, ODA Chairman, commented: "The Learning Legacy framework is the embodiment of a new benchmark that has been created in delivering Europe's largest construction project to the ultimate deadline and within budget. The scale and speed of the coordinated UK effort to build the venues and infrastructure is unprecedented and the knowledge and lessons gained during construction will both benefit the industry and act as a catalyst for inward investment".
Paul King, CEO of UK-GBC commented: "The built environment will play a crucial role both in enabling the UK to reduce its carbon emissions and supporting our transition to a green economy. It is therefore imperative that we take the opportunity to learn from exemplar sustainability projects - like London 2012 - to push the sector to improve design, processes and sourcing of materials to ensure more sustainable outcomes."
Simon Moon, Managing Director at Atkins, sponsors of UK-GBC's Sustainability Lessons Learned Series, commented: "The ability to showcase the work undertaken for the 2012 Games was a major part of our rationale for being the first engineering sponsor of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and we are pleased to support UK-GBC's Sustainability Lessons Learned programme. Working on the project has been transformational for Atkins and we have worked with partners to find new solutions to some unique challenges. These events will be crucial in engaging built environment professionals with the London 2012 construction projects, and will highlight sustainable approaches taken in the design and build of the iconic venues to increase learning in the industry as a whole."
The sustainability lessons learned series is part of the overall ODA Learning Legacy Programme, which covers 10 themes: Design and Engineering Innovation; Equality, inclusion, Employment and Skills; Health and Safety; Masterplanning and Town Planning; Procurement and supply chain management; Programme organisation and project management; Sustainability; Systems and Technology; Transport; Archaeology.
