CRC Underperformers could have helped themselves

Simple energy saving or regulating measures would have helped some of the 800 organisations propping up the CRC league table improve their position. Remarkably it seems that nearly 40% of organisations on the 2106 strong list, which includes major public sector organisations including Government Departments, do not have half-hourly meters installed, and have not sought energy performance accreditation.
DECC is in the top 25 whereas the CRC's own department, the Environment Agency, only manages to rank at 275 and only hit an early action metric of 62.5%. MoD shows the highest emissions and will have to spend around £21m on allowances this year alone.
WSP Environment & Energy director, David Symons, said that the lowest-ranked organisations were simply 'wasting money'.
He said: "Installing the simplest of automatic meter readers, and acting on the data these produce, saves firms around 10% on their energy bills with little capital expense.
"If all of the 800 companies at the bottom of the league table took this simple measure, they would together cut UK carbon emissions by 100,000 tonnes, cut £12m off their energy bills and avoid having to buy £1.2m of CRC allowances."
