Old guns and knives put to good use at the Olympic stadium

Delivering Responsible Procurement, a report published this week by the mayor, revealed that in 2009, the Metropolitan Police Service melted down 14 tonnes of guns and knives and recycled the metal for other uses, such as steel for the construction of the Olympic Stadium. Similarly, London Fire Brigade donated 3.8 tonnes of defunct fire hoses to the Fire Fighters Charity to make handbags, luggage, corporate gifts and belts to raise funds.

Procurement also helped to create employment opportunities throughout the GLA supply chain. Since 2009, Transport for London has had more than 1,900 apprenticeships and brought 2,400 unemployed Londoners back into work by promoting skills and employment through its contracting.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson, said: "The GLA group's responsible approach to procurement has made a significant positive impact on those who work, live in and visit our world-class city. This includes supporting local businesses, providing jobs and skills for Londoners, and improving their quality of life."

Other achievements covered in the report included 86.8 per cent compliance with the policy to pay all SME suppliers within 10 working days and advertising more than 3,000 contract opportunities on the CompeteFor procurement portal.

Deputy mayor Richard Barnes, said: "I am proud to have been champion for the GLA group's responsible procurement programme and overseen the progress highlighted in this report. Working with the functional bodies we have delivered a step change in our approach to procuring the goods and services we require."
