Last week the Mayor of London appointed John Plowman as the new Chair of the London Sustainable Development Commission.
John has a proven track record working on issues relating to sustainable development, notably as a senior civil servant of 30 years standing in areas as diverse as environmental protection, urban regeneration and road safety. He currently runs a busy consultancy that provides advice to a range of clients including DEFRA.
The London Sustainable Development Commission was established in 2002 to advise the Mayor of London on sustainability issues including ways to improve and protect Londoners' quality of life now and in the future.
The Mayor of London, said: 'It is great news that John Plowman has agreed to Chair the London Sustainable Development Commission. London faces a range of serious challenges ahead, such as the delivery of an Olympic legacy, securing recovery from the economic downturn and tackling climate change. It is vital we work to ensure they become opportunities to improve Londoners' quality of life and I look forward to working with John to ensure this happens.'
John Plowman, said: 'I am delighted to be given this opportunity to work at the heart of London government. It is an exciting time of change for London and I am determined that we capitalise on this to deliver improvements for people's lives now and for future generations. I will be building on the achievements of the Commission to date whilst looking for ways to improve in the future. I want to thank Paul de Zylva for his sterling work as interim Chair.'
The Commission is made up of individual experts from the economic, social, environmental and London governance sectors. The work of the Commission is to ensure sustainability is at the core of policies and strategies impacting on London plus making sustainability a meaningful concept for Londoners.
