Better energy performance with CMSM Controls

West Energy Saving Technologies have patented an eco-friendly, energy-efficient Carbon Management Switch Module that is specially designed to help save energy, money and reduce carbon emissions.  The product has been in the market for a number of years and in various forms; Ventmiser controls whole house ventilation systems, Cookermiser controls kitchen extract fans and Showermiser controls bathroom extract fans.

The idea for this product originated from the need to avoid false fire alarms in student accommodation but it has been developed and adapted for a number of household/building uses.  The product has proven very successful with retirement homes and Universities as it helps them reduce the number of false fire alarms and consequently penalties from the Fire Service.  A direct consequence of less unnecessary fire engine trips is a reduced carbon footprint for the Fire Service.  50% of the UK's false fire alarms come from hospitals; this incurs significant costs and causes discomfort amongst patients and staff. Hospitals have a great potential for increasing savings and environmental performance and improving service delivery and patient comfort by avoiding false alarms.

The operation of the device is based on intelligent controls which sense the usage of moisture and fat producing appliances. A current sensor is used to detect the usage of a cooker, toaster or other cooking appliance where as a temperature sensor is used to detect the usage of a bath or shower.  Usage sensing offers a very precise, reliable and maintenance free method of control.

The development of the idea behind the product was influenced by the existing regulatory background but is mostly down to personal commitment.  However, things have changed since the initial stages of development; the building/construction community is now more interested in energy efficiency as a result of Government policies in this field.

The wider enviromental efforts of West Energy Saving Technologies include reducing business travel and to ensure, where feasible, geographic proximity of the supply chain and manufacturing outlets.  Only very small components that cannot be found in the UK are imported. The company's turnover has tripled during the last year and is expected to continue in its current rate of growth.  Their products have recently been recognised by The Carbon Trust and they are listed on the Energy Technology List (part of the Enhanced Capital Allowance Scheme).

Changing the mindset of people and communicating the message have been the major challenges and being an SME has presented challenges. Small-scale marketing is resource intensive but the quality of the product has helped to generate business.

Personal drive to succeed, along with financial stability, have helped the business achieve it's current level of success. West Energy Saving Technologies aspire to have a larger market share to mainstream such products. The Code for Sustainable Homes has had a very positive influence.  Builders are working at level 3 already. The company aims to further reduce the energy use of their products in the future. Government support is important. For further information please email Philip West
