Skanska Green Car policy - leading by example

The concept of sustainability lies behind the way in which Skanska chooses to conduct itself. It is the fundamental principle which defines the condition for the development of its business. In Skanska UK's sustainable business policy the two main drivers for this are clear. Our clients are looking for companies who are knowledgeable and proactive and manage their activities to provide a positive impact in meeting the needs of sustainable development. At the same time our employees, and future employees, want to work for a company they want to be proud of and which recognises the importance of creating a sustainable business within a sustainable world.

As part of Skanska UK's strategic aim to be a sustainable business, Skanska has developed an environmental strategy to address the environmental part of being a sustainable business. The strategy focuses on a number of issues not least energy. The decision to target energy is founded in the belief that this is an area that they can directly impact or reduce. In assessing the business energy usage its car fleet and the fuel used was identified as being an opportunity to improve. The idea being that by modifying its approach to fuel use a change can be seen in its CO2 emissions,
Through combining its focus on its environmental, economic and social strategies, getting every manager in Skanska to recognise the important role they and Skanska can play in reducing the impact their construction has on the environment and the communities in which they work. They believe they will continue to be a sustainable business.

In terms of the actual Green Car Policy itself, the key elements are detailed below:

  • The publication of a Company car list in order of CO2 emissions (ranked from lowest to highest). This list is colour coded  green to red according to the amount of CO2 they emit.
  • Publication of the taxable value of each car, to show their drivers the amount of tax they will pay for each vehicle (generally speaking the lower the CO2 level, the lower the taxable benefit for the driver).
  • Drivers are provided with a cash incentive for choosing a car at a lower grade.
  • The removal of those cars with the highest CO2 emissions in each grade from the company car lists.
