Willmott Dixon - Sustainable Supply Chain Strategy

Willmott Dixon aims to take a leadership role in sustainability in the built environment. All projects are carried out under its unique '10 point plan' to rate just how sustainable they are:

1. Client commitment to making it a sustainable project
2. BREEAM Design
3. Sustainability workshop
4. Energy Performance Certificate Rating
5. Recycled content by value
6. % of waste diverted from landfill
7. Sustainability healthchecks and Post Occupancy Evaluations
8. Whole Life Costing & Life Cycle Analysis undertaken
9. Considerate Constructor Scheme Score
10. Directly associated community project.

Recently the company become the first in the sector to put its staff through a unique online sustainability training module. It also regularly publishes papers with recommendations on how the industry can improve its overall performance, the most recent was on 'whole life costs'.

Knitting this together is its in-house sustainability consultancy Re-Thinking, which gives the company a national skills base in areas like BREEAM assessment, whole life costing, post occupancy evaluations (which are carried out on all completed projects), plus sustainability audits on all projects while in progress.

Providing assistance in this process is Jonathon Porritt, who until July 2009 was chair of the Sustainable Development Commission. Jonathon provides advice on issues such as the Carbon Reduction Commitment and Climate Change Act, plus overall strategic direction to help Willmott Dixon achieve its sustainable aspirations.

Willmott Dixon is working with clients, supply chain and industry bodies like WRAP and the UK Contractors Group to help develop a broader understanding and common commitment for creating a sustainable environment.

Willmott Dixon recently launched its new Sustainable Supply Chain Strategy.
