Highlights from Greater London Authority's Responsible Procurement Awards

On Monday 6 December 2010, the Mayor's Responsible Procurement Awards' ceremony took place at City Hall. The ceremony recognised the contributions made by suppliers to the GLA Group and awards were presented across a range of categories to:

  • Environmental Sustainability: MITIE
  • Ethical Sourcing: Calders and Grandidge
  • Equal Life Chances for All: Lakehouse
  • Supplier Diversity: Skanska UK
  • Skills and Employment: Mott MacDonald
  • Community Benefits: Lakehouse
  • Outstanding Contribution: Lakehouse
  • Most Promising Contribution by an SME: Wagstaff

Winners of the "Supplier Diversity" category, Skanska UK has a clearly set out and comprehensive policy which demonstrates a pro-active approach. Skanska UK ensures that
diverse suppliers are aware of opportunities and seek to remove barriers preventing supplier
opportunities. They achieve this by making good use of Supply London, CompeteFor and Meet the Buyer events and best practice examples include the use of a not-for-profit organisation to support people with learning difficulties, which has not only improved product quality but also delivered efficiency savings.

Winners of the "Skills and Employment" award, Mott Macdonald displayed genuine innovation and sector leadership in driving forward an approach that has seen six industry competitors collaborating with public sector partners including the National Apprenticeship Service, Institute of Civil Engineers and South Thames college to open up a pioneering route way into the Engineering Industry.

Winners of the "Most Outstanding Contribution by a SME" award, Wagstaff is a London-based SME that has made a promising commitment to responsible procurement across a range of initiatives, including establishing a programme to refurbish and reuse furniture across the Metropolitan Police Service estate. In addition, they are supporting local community projects to utilise redundant furniture.

More information about the all winners' case studies can be found on the Responsible Procurement website.
