» CrossCountry advances climate commitments withnear-term SBTi target
Discover how Action Sustainability supported CrossCountry to calculate its carbon footprint and develop a credible near-term target, leading to successful validation through the Science Based Targets initiative.
CrossCountry operates long-distance train services across England, Scotland and Wales, connecting major cities from Aberdeen to Plymouth.
As part of CrossCountry’s ongoing commitment to Sustainability and in line with wider industry strategy, CrossCountry sought to align their decarbonisation efforts with recognised global standards.
To support this ambition, CrossCountry engaged Action Sustainability to help define and submit a near-term science-based target (SBT) for validation through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
To support CrossCountry in achieving SBTi validation, Action Sustainability delivered a structured and collaborative approach that included:
Scope Definition and Screening Held initial scoping discussions with CrossCountry to define organisational boundaries and align with the GHG Protocol. Conducted a Scope 3 screening to identify material and relevant emissions categories.
Data Collection and Baseline Development Worked closely with internal stakeholders to collect, verify, and consolidate emissions data. Addressed data gaps and developed a robust baseline carbon footprint in line with GHG Protocol guidance.
SBTi Submission Support Prepared all necessary documentation for submission to the Science Based Targets initiative. Continued to support CrossCountry by responding to technical queries and ensuring a successful validation outcome.
“Action Sustainability provided invaluable expertise and support throughout our SBTi validation process. Their structured and collaborative approach enabled us to gain a detailed understanding of our emissions and align our near-term targets with CrossCountry’s broader sustainability priorities. By delivering a robust carbon footprint baseline, we can now focus on material impacts and transparently demonstrate progress against our decarbonisation goals. Their responsiveness and deep knowledge made a complex process both clear and successful.”
Action Sustainability’s work with CrossCountry allowed for the successful validation of their Science Based Target.
The initial screening and scope development exercise placed an important role in establishing the relevant and material areas of CrossCountry’s business and set the foundation for the data gathering stage.
Action Sustainability were able to provide CrossCountry with a baseline carbon footprint, aligned with the GHG protocol, providing them with transparency of their carbon emissions and where their hotspots lie.
Action Sustainability are recognised leaders in sustainability delivery and sustainable procurement.
