The Challenge

Following an initial ISO 20400 evaluation, ESB set goals to embed sustainability across procurement activities and business units. The organisation needed an independent re-evaluation to understand how its approach had developed, recognise progress and identify practical priorities for the next stage of improvement. The review needed to consider ESB’s broad procurement profile while assessing how consistently sustainable procurement was being applied across the procurement lifecycle.

Our Approach

Action Sustainability completed a full re-evaluation of ESB’s sustainable procurement approach against ISO 20400:2017. We reviewed relevant policies, strategies, procedures, tools and procurement examples, and interviewed stakeholders involved at different stages of the procurement lifecycle.

We compared the findings with the initial evaluation to understand how ESB’s maturity had developed, and where further improvement could add the greatest value.

We then produced an evidence-led report and prioritised recommendations tailored to ESB’s organisational context, existing sustainability commitments and procurement arrangements.

The ISO 20400 re-evaluation provided an independent view of the progress ESB has made since its initial assessment. Action Sustainability recognised the improvements already underway and provided clear, practical recommendations to support the next stage of our sustainable procurement journey.

The Results & Impact

The re-evaluation confirmed that ESB had made significant progress, reaching a ‘Mature’ level of performance against ISO 20400. Stronger governance and oversight, new Sustainable Procurement Principles, more mature social sustainability and supply chain due diligence, and more proactive supplier engagement all contributed to this outcome. The review also identified stronger examples of sustainability being considered during procurement planning and sourcing.

The assessment gave ESB an independent view of its progress and a focused roadmap for continued improvement. Recommendations centred on strengthening the link between organisational sustainability ambitions and procurement delivery, embedding sustainability earlier in decision-making, and improving how outcomes are managed and measured.

This next phase will help ESB build on its established foundations and support more consistent, measurable sustainable procurement practices across the procurement lifecycle.
