Laing O’Rourke Re-evaluates Procurement Approach to Enhance Sustainability with ISO 20400 Assessment​

The Challenge​

Having undertaken their first ISO 20400 evaluation in 2023, Laing O’Rourke wanted to have a re-evaluation to understand how far they have progressed over the intervening years in aligning their procurement approach to the ISO 20400 Standard.​

As with the first evaluation, Action Sustainability’s assessment and subsequent report’s findings and recommendations will help Laing O’Rourke take its procurement to even higher levels of sustainability.


Our Approach​

We recently assessed Laing O’Rourke’s procurement practices to evaluate how effectively sustainability is embedded and implemented across its projects. Our approach included:​

  • Assessment Method: Deploying our tried and tested method to assess procurement policies and processes.​
  • Standards Review: Reviewing Laing O’Rourke’s approach against the ISO 20400 Standard’s evaluation sections:​
    • Policy and Strategy​
    • Organising the Procurement Function​
    • The Procurement Process​
  • Document Analysis: Conducting a document review, including policies, strategies, job descriptions, and tender assessment documents.​
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Interviewing key individuals from across the business, at various levels and roles, to test how well sustainability objectives are deployed through procurement.

The Results & Impact​

Laing O’Rourke was found to have significantly improved its approach to sustainable procurement and it is now assessed to be ‘leading’.​

This reflects a 23% increase on the initial assessment in 2023. The evaluation results give them an updated action plan to use across its business, helping them embed sustainability even further into its interactions and relationships with suppliers, contractors and stakeholders, as well as developing the sustainability capability of its employees.​

All of which contributes to achieving Laing O’Rourke’s ‘Pushing the boundaries’ sustainability goals and targets to reduce environmental impact while positively contributing to society, whether that’s its people, customers, or the communities they operate in.​
