EKFB JV adopted the Sustainability Tool in 2020 to measure and manage supply chain performance and fulfil reporting requirements for HS2. With over 200 suppliers and sub-contractors (as of 2023) contributing comprehensive insights about their operations, our platform measures and tracks the impacts across EKFB and HS2’s sustainability KPIs.
This case study explores EKFB’s journey towards effectively measuring and reporting their performance with the Sustainability Tool. EKFB JV is a joint venture that brings together international, market-leading expertise from four leading civil engineering and construction companies: Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial, and BAM. They were appointed by HS2 (High-Speed Two Ltd) to deliver civil engineering works across an 80km section of the new high-speed rail link between the Great Missenden in the south and Southam in the north. They are also a Partner of the Supply Chain Sustainability School.
As a delivery partner for HS2, EKFB is required to measure and report performance data against environmental and social KPIs. Several of the HS2 delivery partners have adopted the Sustainability Tool to drive consistency in a reporting approach, allow for industry best practise to be shared between other delivery partners, and collaborate to achieve better data quality.
Since their initial adoption of the Tool, EKFB JV has accumulated data spanning multiple years and consistently met their obligation of submitting monthly reports to HS2 punctually. Moreover, they’ve integrated the Tool into their procurement strategies, which has culminated in the onboarding of suppliers and the Tool’s expanded use to include over 200 suppliers.
EKFB has also developed a ‘Skills & Legacy Forum’ where they have quarterly engagements with tier one suppliers. These meetings involve reviewing progress, sharing challenges and opportunities, identifying collaboration and showcasing best practices.
EKFB’s increased dedication to sustainability has extended beyond data collection, as they aim to progress from performance management to further analysing data for improvement. As part of this, EKFB is committing the right resources internally to manage the Tool, and assigning accountability at senior level. Allocating specific time to analysing dashboards in conjunction with continuing tool development will enable EKFB to further progress this key aim.
Through their partnership with the Supply Chain Sustainability School, they are also supporting their supply chain to upskill in all areas of sustainability, creating bespoke learning pathways that focus on key issues across the industry – therefore supporting them to report more accurate and reliable data into the Tool.
Through consistent use of the Sustainability Tool and engaging over 200 suppliers, EKFB JV has demonstrated their commitment to measuring and managing supply chain performance, enabling them to go beyond HS2’s reporting requirements.
