The Task

The corporate Head of Environment and Sustainability at Network Rail sought external perspective and assistance to tackle a range of strategic sustainability challenges. Action Sustainability was asked to deliver this work because of our experience with other very large companies and within specific parts of Network Rail’s business.

    The Action

    • We reviewed the scope of sustainability outputs and outcomes the business had committed to its regulator and other stakeholders to address and considered the resource and business structure implications of these commitments. We structured an “Integrated Plan” for planning, tracking, monitoring and reporting corporate sustainability performance, on a period (4 weekly) (quarterly) and annual basis
    • We analysed the scope of peers’ approaches to sustainability and proposed additional objectives and how they could be achieved
    • We compiled sustainability reporting for the business, including organising external verification of regulated data, for two financial years (13/14 and 14/15)
    • We benchmarked the organisation for “responsible business” activity and compiled and submitted a corporate submission to the Business in the Community (BitC) Corporate Responsibility (CR) Index 2015 which achieved 4 stars out of 5 (96%)
    • Compilation, for the Executive, of a corporate gap-analysis and action plan based on learning from compilation of submission to BitC CR Index 2015

    The Benefit

    • Improved visibility of sustainability performance, challenges and opportunities within the business
    • Improved transparency around sustainability performance to external stakeholders
    • Enhanced reputation
